As you all know, I’ve been a huge fan of Fall Out Boy since boys wearing skinny jeans and eyeliner cycled back in the early 2000s. While fans were thrilled that the band reunited after their album ‘Folie a Deux’, there were others that had mixed feelings about their shift in sound. Kind of.
Fall Out Boy has always been an extremely versatile band, having had collaborations with artists spanning from rapper, Big Sean, to the legendary singer/songwriter, Elton John. With their history of using a variety of instruments, random sound effects, and ridiculous lyrics, their genre is closer to ‘theatrical’ than anything. I think that’s what makes Fall Out Boy, “Fall Out Boy”: their act.
While they’re pop punk at their core, Fall Out Boy is extremely difficult to categorize. What we’ve come to identify in each of their ‘shifts’ is the snark and the fun presentation to thought-provoking lyrics; Changes in pitches and keys to not just show emotion but to tell a story. This has allowed them to maintain their essence throughout the years.
Their newly released song ‘Heartbreak Feels so Good’ from their upcoming album ‘So Much (For) Stardust’ is just as consistent. One of the comments on the video perfectly describes it as “a blend of every style that the band has used in their careers.”. While it’s not as heavy as their earlier songs, the band’s playful delivery and punch make it just as fun and unmistakably Fall Out Boy. The video is also hilarious and is a refreshing reminder that our boys haven’t changed at all. Or have even grown up.
